So, now that January’s about over, I thought I’d check in and see how everyone’s New Year’s Resolutions are holding up. Still hanging in there? If you answered no, you’re in good company. Data shows that only 64% of resolutions made will make it through the first month, and after six months, fewer than half the people who made New Year’s resolutions will have stuck with them. These statistics actually sound a bit generous to me. I personally don’t normally make serious resolutions for the new year, but when I have, they haven’t made it more than a couple of weeks. So if you’re still sticking with your plan, I am impressed!

If you’re not doing so well, or perhaps you’re just having a hard time staying motivated this winter, here’s a little inspiration for you. In January 2009, Ben Davis realized he really wasn’t happy with life and needed to make some changes. He took up running, started making healthier choices, lost 120lbs and gained happiness, choosing to Do Life! This is his 120lb journey.

Puppies in Lingerie!

I spent most of yesterday on the couch with a box of tissues and my favorite blanket (yes, at almost 29, I have a blankie that I carry around just about everywhere when I’m in the house. I’m like Linus… and it’s cold in here!) and caught up on DVR’d episodes of Conan. Hey, I know how to have a good time!

As I’m sure you know, the Super Bowl is tonight. Some of you will probably tune in to the Puppy Bowl and others may watch the Lingerie Bowl (this one was new to me, too). Conan decided to combine the two, which is pure genius and a prime example of what makes Conan so awesome.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Puppies in Lingerie!

Tonight, I will be heading over to my parents’ house to watch the game and have a joint birthday celebration for me and my brother. There will be all the normal Super Bowl munchies… not sure what I’m going to bring yet.

Jamie Oliver speaks about our need to educate the public about the food we eat and shares some stories about his work in Huntington, West Virginia. I saw this awhile ago and have been meaning to share it. It’s exciting to watch him speak so passionately about a subject that he clearly cares a lot about. It’s definitely worth the 20 minutes if you have it.

Training Your Wine Palate With Gary Vaynerchuk

The other day when I was checking out Wine Library TV, which is basically my main source for when I want to try out some new wines, I came across this video that’s a couple of years old in which the super knowledgeable, super entertaining Gary Vaynerchuk tastes a number of different random things that are flavors frequently found in wine and I felt the need to share it. This is apparently how he learned to train his palate at the age of 17, when he was too young to really be training his palate by trying the actual wine. As I was watching this, I couldn’t help but think that I should try this out as a tasting exercise – perhaps with a few friends (any takers?) with the wines that are supposed to contain these sorts of flavor profiles. OK, so probably not all like 30 some odd things he tasted here – probably not socks, or dirt, or a rock (unless you’re up for that), but we could try out a few… As someone who enjoys wine, but has trouble really picking out the various flavors present in it, I think this could be a really neat exercise.

By the way, if you haven’t checked out Wine Library TV and you have any interest in learning more about wine, you definitely should check it out. Gary Vaynerchuk is pretty awesome to watch (definitely high energy and something of an insane genius) and probably the reason I’ve taken such a great interest in wine. I usually hit up the site on Saturday mornings before I do my wine shopping – just to get some ideas of what I might want to purchase and what I should be looking out for.

So anyway, check out the video – it’s a half hour long, but fairly entertaining (I think)- even if you’re not really into wine.

Ahh, Rachel Maddow… sometimes I think I might love her (and her goofy laugh) – and I’m not embarrassed. I came across this while perusing My Left Nutmeg – Where Connecticut Dems Scratch that Progressive Itch – and I had to share.

Here she highlights the hypocrisy of the Republican party in their voting against stimulus money, but then taking full credit for it’s results in their home districts. Beautiful.

Well, long time no post, eh?

Seems that things have been more than a bit hectic here in The World According To Kate and blogging has kind of had to take a back seat to more important things… like work – that thing that helps me pay the bills and allows me to keep The World According To Kate filled with fun and excitement. Yes, the old work-life balance seems to have become dramatically weighted towards the work ends of things and I have had neither the time nor the motivation to do any sort of updating as of late.

There does seem to be a light at the end of the tunnel ( I can see it! I can see it! ) and things should be returning back to business as usual around here in the not too distant future.

In the mean time, I leave you with this:

My parents recently had some landscaping done and they had a plant called catmint planted around their mailbox. Well, of course, I heard catnip and this was the exact scene that I imagined in their front yeard. As a cat person, I thought this was quite awesome, but I could see how the neighbors might disapprove.

Oh, and this is catmint (not catnip).
